The National Consumer Bankruptcy Rights Center (NCBRC) is thrilled to announce the addition of two distinguished professionals to our Board of Directors: Eugene Melchionne and Thomas Moers Mayer. With decades of legal expertise and deep commitments to consumer bankruptcy rights, Gene and Tom bring invaluable knowledge and leadership to our mission.
Eugene Melchionne: A Champion of Consumer Bankruptcy Law
Gene Melchionne has dedicated his career to consumer bankruptcy, foreclosure defense, and financial advocacy. A Drake University School of Law graduate, Gene has been a trusted authority in Connecticut’s legal landscape, advising attorneys, municipal offices, and consumers navigating financial distress. Beyond his legal practice, he has educated the next generation of lawyers and financial professionals as an adjunct professor at Post University and the American Institute of Banking.
A recognized voice in the bankruptcy field, Gene co-founded the former Bankruptcy Law Network in 2006, which provided clear and accessible consumer credit information at the time. His insights have been featured in major publications, including The New York Times and The Hartford Courant. As a former Board Member, Secretary, and Vice President of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), Gene’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping consumer protection efforts nationwide.
Thomas Moers Mayer: A Leader in Restructuring and Bankruptcy Litigation
Thomas Moers Mayer brings unparalleled experience in bankruptcy and restructuring law to the NCBRC Board. A senior counsel at Kramer Levin, Tom has played a pivotal role in some of U.S. history’s largest and most complex Chapter 11 and municipal bankruptcy cases. His work on behalf of unsecured creditor committees spans landmark cases involving General Motors, Chrysler, Detroit, Puerto Rico, and Patriot Coal, where he has fiercely protected creditor and bondholder rights.
Tom’s legal influence extends beyond the courtroom. He has testified before Congress, advised on the creation of PROMESA, and served on the U.S. Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules—appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts. His expertise has been recognized for over 20 years by Chambers USA and Chambers Global, cementing his status as a preeminent bankruptcy attorney.
A Stronger Future for Consumer Bankruptcy Advocacy
With Gene’s focus on consumer bankruptcy protection and Tom’s extensive restructuring experience, NCBRC is better positioned than ever to advocate for the rights of financially distressed consumers. Their leadership will strengthen our ability to support bankruptcy attorneys, shape policy, and ensure fair outcomes for individuals facing financial hardship.
Please join us in welcoming Gene Melchionne and Tom Mayer to the NCBRC Board of Directors!
